SHARING HOPE WITH MALAWI’S YAO LISTENER CLUBS

Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world, is home to a large community of Yao people – a community deeply influenced by Islam. Yet in the midst of all this, God is still at work, as many Yao people have been listening in on FEBC broadcasts, embracing the Good News of Jesus Christ, and opening their hearts to the Gospel.

This movement is made possible by the faithful work of Amos (pictured holding a radio), FEBC Malawi’s Director. Amos makes regular trips out to the remote villages of Malawi, bringing with him radios, worship songs, and the message of salvation to those who may otherwise never encounter them. When Amos arrives at a village, he greets the crowd who has gathered and joyfully teaches them a new worship song, filling the air in the village with praise.

For the past 3 years, FEBC Malawi has been faithfully broadcasting the Gospel through Litala FM. In rural Malawi, radios are a rare commodity, yet God is using this unassuming piece of technology to make His message known. When one person tunes in, others from the village start to gather around to listen, drawn in by the message of hope and truth of Jesus Christ. Overtime, these gatherings became known as “listener clubs”. These “listener clubs” have grown to an average size of 15 people, all gathered around a radio to hear the Word together and grow in faith.

In Malawi, the official languages are English and Chewa, but hundreds of tribal languages are spoken in remote villages. Many of these villages may have never encountered the Gospel in their heart language. For the Yao people, FEBC Malawi’s “Litala FM” – which means “The Way” –has become a beacon of hope, as it broadcasts the Good News of Jesus Christ in their own language.

Today, there are almost 319,000 Yao listeners tuning in regularly to Litala FM.

GIVE NOW

What started as these small listener clubs, has now grown to entire communities being transformed. Today, there are almost 319,000 Yao listeners tuning in regularly to Litala FM. God is using this broadcast to break down barriers, bringing the truth of salvation to the Yao people and transforming hearts and lives across the region.

Some of these “listener clubs” have grown into informal churches, humble spaces where believers gather together to worship and encounter God’s word. These churches have no electricity, the floors are smoothed dirt, tarps are laid down for seating, and the thatched roofs are topped by aluminum. Purposeful holes in the brick walls allow airflow through the building, but they also let in bugs and even snakes. Yet, these faithful believers are brought together by the power of the Gospel to worship together and grow in God’s love.

What started with one radio has blossomed into a powerful movement, spreading the message of the hope of Jesus Christ across villages and drawing souls closer to God.
