Meet Edwin Tsang, China Ministry Director of FEBCanada
With a heart for the spiritually unreached in mainland China, Edwin Tsang has devoted his life to the proclamation of the Gospel across borders and barriers. As the China Ministry Director of FEBCanada, Edwin leads the production and distribution of Chinese-language radio and media programs that bring hope, truth, and the love of Christ to listeners across China. From his early days as a young engineering graduate to his divine calling into full-time ministry, Edwin’s journey has been marked by obedience, faith, and an unwavering commitment to the Great Commission.
Here, Edwin shares his powerful story—a testimony of surrender, calling, and how God continues to use one life to reach millions behind closed borders.
In January 1979, a 27 year-old man boarded a flight from Vancouver to Hong Kong, returning to the city he had left more than five years earlier. He had just graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, full of hope and uncertainty. As he landed at Hong Kong International Airport, he was welcomed by the warm embrace of family and friends—but even more profoundly, he was stepping into a life-changing journey he could never have foreseen. At that time, he was still unaware of the spiritual challenges and blessings that lay ahead. Yet in God’s perfect timing, that young man—naïve to the ways of the world but held in His grace—was me, stepping by faith into the unknown.
Like many young graduates fresh out of university, I longed to find a mentor who could guide me as I pursued my career. By God’s grace, I soon landed a position at the only geological and quarrying engineering company in Hong Kong—which at the time was a firm specializing in quarry development across the city. I was thrilled. It felt like the beginning of a promising future, and I thought this was the breakthrough I had been praying for.
But just as I was celebrating this new beginning, the Lord intervened in an unexpected way. I crossed paths with Pastor Lu, who was serving as Executive Director of Far East Broadcasting Company in Hong Kong at the time. He looked me in the eye and asked a question that shook me, "Are you willing to give up your dream, devote yourself to gospel radio, use your voice to proclaim Christ, and serve God to the ends of the earth?"
To be honest, at that moment I felt like the rich young ruler in the Bible. I thought, "But I have such a bright future ahead—how can I walk away from the engineering career I’ve worked so hard for?" So with a heavy heart, I said no to the Lord’s call.
But on the way home that day, the Holy Spirit spoke clearly and powerfully to my heart:
"Son, today you have nothing—not a cent to your name—yet you’re unwilling to follow Me. When you are successful one day, do you think it will be easier to say yes?"
That moment pierced me to the core. Those words became the guiding motto of my life—and marked the beginning of a journey I could have never imagined.
Soon after, I joined Far East Gospel Broadcasting in Hong Kong—marking the beginning of my journey into full-time ministry. Around that time, China had just begun to open its doors to the world. Although I had never set foot in the country before, I was sent on a mission to gain a firsthand understanding of the people I would be called to serve with all my heart.
Stepping onto the soil of my ancestors—a land of 1.4 billion people—was a moment of deep shock and spiritual awakening. I was overwhelmed not just by the scale of the population, but by the spiritual need I sensed all around me. It was there, standing on that vast and unfamiliar land, that God stirred my heart. From that moment on, I knew I was being called to devote my entire life to faithfully proclaiming the gospel to these people—many of whom belonged to the world’s most spiritually unreached people groups.
One year passed quickly. In God’s perfect timing, I relocated to Canada and was introduced to Far East Broadcasting Canada. At that time, the primary focus of FEBCanada was to mobilize support from Canadian believers to fund the production centers of Far East Broadcasting in countries like Thailand, Indonesia, and Myanmar. Although there wasn’t any Chinese-language program production in Canada yet, I began serving as a volunteer during my spare time—helping to introduce the ministry to local Chinese churches and believers. For four years, I laboured quietly but joyfully, planting seeds and raising awareness for this unique calling to reach the unreached through radio.
Then came a turning point. In 1984, as Hong Kong faced growing uncertainty about its return to Chinese sovereignty in 1997, there were concerns that gospel broadcasting from Hong Kong into China might soon be hindered or even shut down. In response, the Board of Directors at Far East Broadcasting Hong Kong made a critical and prayerful decision: to establish a China Gospel Broadcasting Production Center in Vancouver. The goal was to ensure the continuity of gospel outreach into mainland China, even if circumstances in Hong Kong changed.
Faced with this new calling, I made a life-changing decision. I laid down the microcomputer service company I had built over the past four years and, under the spiritual guidance of Pastor Liang (then Director of the Far East Chinese Ministry), I officially joined FEBCanada as a full-time employee. My heart was set on one mission: to proclaim Christ to my fellow countrymen in mainland China.
From our Vancouver studio, we produced Chinese-language gospel programs and broadcast them across borders using shortwave and medium-wave transmitters located in Jeju Island and Incheon (South Korea), as well as in Manila (Philippines). It was a bold and faith-filled endeavor—reaching behind closed doors with the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Over the years, we’ve witnessed countless stories of God’s mercy and grace. I’d like to share just a few testimonies that reflect His faithful provision in our early days.
During a season when resources were limited and the future of FEBCanada felt uncertain, God faithfully opened doors through the generosity of His people. The Richmond Chinese Alliance Church graciously offered space for a recording studio and a temporary office. A devoted supporter donated professional broadcast equipment, providing exactly what we needed to begin production. Moved by God’s clear leading, a former Radio Hong Kong broadcaster also joined the team—and soon, others followed. By God’s grace, what began as a small effort quickly became a passionate production team, united in the mission of sharing Christ with the people of China.
What began as a small team producing just four hours of Chinese gospel programming each month has, by God’s grace, grown into a thriving ministry broadcasting over 60 hours monthly into mainland China. Early programs were aired through shortwave and medium-wave transmissions, and listener letters from China became powerful reminders of God at work. Support from Canadian believers also grew—what began as under $10,000 in annual donations rose to nearly $50,000, a clear sign of God multiplying our efforts through His people.
Through persistent prayer and the Lord’s provision, FEBCanada was able to purchase a two-storey, 10,000-square-foot office in Burnaby, later moving to Richmond and Markham (Toronto), where we now operate with modern recording studios and office space. These facilities—made possible by the generosity of Chinese Canadian believers, supporters, and churches—support a team of over 20 full-time and part-time staff. Today, the growing response from thousands of listeners each month is a living testimony to the power of God’s Word and the fruit of faithful partnership in reaching the unreached.

Recently, a colleague shared a deeply moving encounter. After preaching a sermon, he was approached by a sister in Christ who said, “My husband asked me to find you. He had always resisted the Gospel, but a few months ago, he happened to hear your message on the radio. That day, he was touched—so deeply that he decided to give his life to the Lord. This morning, he couldn’t be here because of work, but he told me to make sure I found you—not only to thank you, but to encourage you. Please keep going! Because out there, many people are still waiting to hear your voice. Their hearts are hungry for God’s Word.”
Stories like this remind us of why we do what we do. The fields are still white for harvest—and until all have heard – we continue to press on.
Dear brothers and sisters, the story of FEBCanada’s Chinese Production Center is, at every turn, a testimony to the grace and faithfulness of God. From humble beginnings to fruit that now reaches across oceans, the journey has been filled with miracles—too many to count. And through it all, I give thanks to God, and I give thanks for you—our fellow workers, supporters, and prayer warriors. You have stood with us in faith, and we are not alone.
With God, nothing is impossible.
And in Him, even the impossible is nothing.
May the Lord continue to bless you abundantly as we serve together—until all have heard!
Together in His service,

Rev. Edwin Tsang
