Waves of Grace: The Philippines as a Lifeline for China—and What It Means Today
In 1948, something extraordinary was happening in Asia. As the bamboo curtain fell, China’s doors slammed shut to foreign missionaries. Churches were closed, pastors imprisoned, and the future of the Gospel seemed uncertain under the weight of a rising Communist regime.
But even as the world watched in uncertainty, God was already at work, shifting the course of missions and raising up an unlikely new outpost for the Gospel.
Thousands of kilometers away, in the Philippines—a newly independent island nation—God was planting a seed. This was to be the beginning of a powerful movement, one that would extend far beyond the nation’s shores.

The Shift That Changed Everything
When the doors to China closed, three American missionaries—Bob Bowman, John Broger, and William Roberts—were faced with a pressing question: How could they continue to bring the Gospel to China without stepping foot on its soil? The answer, they believed, lay in the air. What if the Gospel could travel through the airwaves instead of across borders?
In 1948, they began broadcasting from the Philippines. The country had just gained independence and, with its religious freedom, strong infrastructure, and welcoming people, it was the perfect place to launch a new kind of mission. The first FEBC radio station was set up in Karuhatan, Valenzuela, with little more than a microphone, a transmitter, and a vision to reach China.
The Philippines: A Hidden Powerhouse
From the start, Filipinos embraced this mission with passion and dedication. Local engineers maintained the transmitters, broadcasters recorded programs, and churches supported the ministry with prayer and resources. For many, it was more than just a task—it was a calling. Filipinos, many of whom had never traveled beyond their islands, saw themselves as missionaries, using radio to reach distant lands.
The broadcasts—initially in Mandarin and Cantonese—began to penetrate China’s borders. The signal traveled over mountains, across valleys, and through jungles, reaching hidden villages and secret house churches where missionaries could not go. As they listened in secret, Chinese believers began to send letters—often smuggled out of the country—bearing testimonies of how the Gospel had reached them.
“I heard about Jesus through your program. I’ve given my life to Him,” one letter read. Another said, “Your broadcast is the only spiritual food we have.” These letters were a lifeline—both for the believers and for those still waiting to hear.

The Miracle Continues
Even through the harshest seasons of persecution in China—the Cultural Revolution, government crackdowns, and increasing surveillance—the broadcasts from the Philippines never stopped. From humble beginnings in Karuhatan, FEBC’s reach expanded to new transmission sites, and today, broadcasts continue from Bocaue and Iba, reaching millions across East and Central Asia.
Despite the digital age, where governments monitor every app and block websites, shortwave radio remains an unfiltered, anonymous, and deeply personal way to share the Gospel. Every day, voices still speak into the darkness from behind studio microphones, sending hope where it’s needed most.
China Rising: From Field to Force
As the Gospel took root in China, something unexpected began to happen: the underground Church there grew, and with it, the vision to take the Gospel even further. Now, estimates suggest that there are over 100 million Christians in China. And the story doesn’t end there.
Inspired by the “Back to Jerusalem” movement, Chinese believers are stepping into their own missionary calling. They’re taking the Gospel westward, following the ancient Silk Road to reach unreached people groups across Central Asia, the Middle East, and beyond. Many of these missionaries were spiritually prepared by the very broadcasts that began in the Philippines decades ago.
Two Nations, One Mission
This story is about two nations: one that was once closed off to the Gospel but is now sending missionaries to the ends of the earth, and the other—a small archipelago—becoming a beacon of hope, faithfully sending light to the world through radio.
Today, the Philippines continues to be a vital mission hub, with FEBC remaining deeply invested in reaching people both locally and globally. As China sends missionaries to new frontiers, the partnership between the two nations deepens. FEBC's Chinese broadcasters continue to equip Chinese believers, discipling them through radio, digital apps, and follow-up ministries. They may never meet face-to-face, but they are united in one mission.
The harvest is real, and the story is still unfolding.
Let the waves of grace keep rolling—until all have heard!
