What Chinese Christians Are Up Against Today

Christians in China today face growing spiritual challenges. As families struggle and young people have limited access to the Gospel, the need for biblical teaching and discipleship is greater than ever. Yet even in these difficult circumstances, God continues to move, opening hearts and drawing people to Himself.

Challenge #1
Trade tensions are fueling social and cultural divides.

You might not realize that trade tensions can actually lead to deeper social and cultural divides. The global economic model we’ve relied on for years is starting to shift, and behind these changes is a growing ideological rift—like what we see in the U.S.-China trade war. At the heart of it all is a clash between different political systems and values.

With global economic cooperation becoming more difficult, local-first thinking and populism are on the rise. Competing ideologies are coming to the surface, and these growing tensions could lead to more conflicts across nations, ethnic groups, religions, and cultures. While the long-term impact remains uncertain, it’s something we must watch closely and reflect on deeply.

Challenge #2
How Can Faith-Based Content Break Through the “Information Cocoon” Barrier?

In today’s digital world, algorithms tend to show us only what we already like or agree with—creating a kind of “Information Cocoon” where it’s hard to hear different voices.

For Christians, this presents a challenge. We want to share our faith, but often, gospel-centered content gets filtered out and doesn’t reach as many people.

That’s why we’re committed to finding creative, meaningful ways to break through these barriers—so that more hearts can encounter the hope of the gospel. Let’s keep shining the light, even when the platform feels limiting.

Challenge #3
Rising Divorce Rates and the Strain on Marriage

In recent years, China’s divorce rate has steadily increased—reaching about 41% in 2024, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. This points to the growing difficulties many couples face in keeping their marriages strong.

While Christian couples are influenced by biblical teachings that discourage divorce, real-life challenges like social pressures, job stress, and poor communication can still put their marriages at risk. Many Christian families also lack access to practical spiritual support, such as resources for family worship, marriage counseling, or faith-based parenting programs.

Some churches offer limited or unclear teaching on topics like divorce and remarriage, which can leave believers feeling confused, unsure how to handle their situation, and sometimes alone in their struggles.

Challenge #4
Difficulties in Guiding the Next Generation Toward Christ

Today’s entertainment-driven culture and materialism are highly appealing to young people, making it increasingly difficult for churches to attract and retain them. Adding to the challenge are legal restrictions that limit minors’ participation in religious activities, further complicating the passing on of faith.

Meanwhile, students are under heavy academic pressure, and mental health struggles are becoming more widespread. Many “second-generation believers” who grew up in the church are slowly drifting away from their faith. Pastors have also observed that youth ministries, college fellowships, and Sunday schools have weakened in recent years—and the effects are now becoming more evident.

Can we pass on our faith to the next generation? It’s a question we must begin to take seriously.

Challenge #5
Lack of Resources and Training

Christian books and training materials are tightly regulated in China, and approved resources are scarce. Many churches face a shortage of trained leaders and lack access to structured theological education. As a result, both preaching and discipleship training are often underdeveloped and in need of strengthening.

Chinese Christians today are standing firm in their faith amid intensifying spiritual and societal challenges. From government restrictions and increasing surveillance to the moral challenges affecting families and youth, the need for the Gospel has never been more urgent. Yet, even in the face of persecution, God is building His Church. Believers are holding fast to Christ, boldly proclaiming His name, and seeking to reach the lost with the hope of salvation. Their perseverance is a powerful witness to the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. As members of the global Body of Christ, we are called to stand with them in prayer, support, and partnership—trusting that God will use every trial to advance His Kingdom in China and beyond.
